Congratulations to Marshall Fundamental Secondary School as the recipient of the top award in the State of California for Civic Learning, the Civic Learning Award of Excellence.
"The Civic Learning Award celebrates public schools' efforts to engage students in civic learning. The award program also identifies models that can be replicated in other schools. Co-sponsored by the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, and California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson." As an Award of Excellence recipient, Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye will make a personal visit to Marshall Fundamental to present this award.
Furthermore, the Civic Learning Award recognizes the important role public schools play in preparing students to participate in our democracy. The selection committee, comprised of leaders in education and law, awarded Marshall Fundamental's commitment to providing our students with high-quality civic education.
Examples where our students have displayed partnerships to support civic education and were active participants in democracy, include our Annual Innovation Projects, Civics courses, and Student Government. The Innovation Project is where our students work on solving a real-world problem locally, school-wide, or statewide. They conduct research, write essays, make proposals, and later present their proposals to professional policymakers. Our Innovation Projects are school-wide and collaborative across all academic disciplines.
