09/2017 The Gates Scholarship-The Gates Scholarship has changed, but is available to seniors this year.  Deadline is Sept 14th.  https://www.thegatesscholarship.org/scholarship

     BASIC ELIGIBILITY:  A high school senior, From at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American, Pell-eligible, a US citizen, national or permanent resident, a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. Additionally, a student must plan to enroll full-time, in a four-year degree program, at a US accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university.
     IDEAL CANDIDATE: An outstanding academic record in high school (in the top 10% of his/her graduating class); Demonstrated leadership ability (e.g., as shown through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities); Exceptional personal success skills (e.g., emotional maturity, motivation, perseverance, etc.)
 
 
09/2017 Fly-in programs-  I am sharing this great link for fly-in programs that specifically target first gen and underrepresented students.  Deadlines are fast approaching!  
Some great campuses such as Emory University,  George Washington, Rice, and many more are on the list.

For PUSD, 4 year college bound, African-American students with GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale. 2/26/2018    Alpha Kappa Alpha                                                 

For college-bound African American high school seniors residing or attending school in the Pasadena, Altadena or San Gabriel Valley area.
SCHOLARSHIP CATEGORIES:
1. S.T.E.A.M: This category is reserved for young women interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering, art or math. Two awards are available. Required minimum 2.7 GPA.
2. Social Justice/Economic Development: This category is reserved for young women pursuing a career that will impact social, economic and/or human rights change. Required minimum 2.7 GPA.
3. Most Improved G.P.A.: This category is reserved for young women who have experienced a significant improvement in their GPA from freshman to senior years. Required minimum 2.3 GPA.
4. Young African American Male: This category is reserved for young men who are using education to achieve their life goals. Required minimum 2.7 GPA.
5. Special Needs: This category is for young men or women with a documented learning disability who intend to enroll in a Bachelor’s degree program, two year community college, vocational school or technical training program.         

The application is available at www.aka-elo.org, click on “Scholarship.” All directions below must be followed or the application will be disqualified. All interested applicants need to TYPE, complete and submit the following:
1. An official un-opened copy of your transcript;
2. A TYPED and completed Personal Information Sheet (Page 3), including a wallet-sized 2”x2” photo. This page can be completed and printed from the website www.aka-elo.org, click on “Scholarship”;
3. A TYPED Personal Essay (maximum two pages) addressing the questions in your Scholarship Award category (See questions on Page 4);
4. A TYPED Activities Record detailing your extracurricular activities, community involvement and volunteer experiences (Page 5); and
5. TWO Letters of Recommendation (Page 5), one from your school counselor and one from a teacher, advisor or coach who can attest to your qualifications in the area for which you are applying.

4/15/2018    John Muir Class of 1965 Scholarship                   

Available to Muir seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence or progress & school involvement Complete and submit to Dr. Gonzalez

 

4/16/2018     Jack and Jill Pasadena Scholarship- For African-American seniors planning on attending a two-year or four-year trade school, college or university in the fall of 2018. Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and 15 community service hours in 2017-2018. Students must complete application by April 16th. Complete application and submit to jackandjillscholarships@gmail.com.

 

4/17/2018     Chuck Bradford Scholarship- For students who have a 2.5 or above and are attending a full time college or university in 2018. Students have demonstrated leadership abilities at Muir. Must be completed and mailed or turned into Dr. Gonzalez by April 17th.
