Pasadena Unified Math Academy Solve 2017 Competition Is May 13, 2017

Pasadena, CA -- On Saturday, May 13, 2017, fifth-seventh graders in Pasadena Unified’s Math Academy will compete in “Solve 2017,” an exciting, highly interactive event that features both individual and team contests. The contest will be held on the campus of Caltech.

The competition is the end-of-year culmination of the Pasadena Unified School District’s (PUSD) Math Academy, a program that radically accelerates the learning curve of mathematically gifted students. Seventh grade Math Academy students took the Advanced Placement Calculus test this week, a test normally taken by 11th graders.

The Math Academy operates during school hours at McKinley School, Washington STEAM Magnet Academy, and Sierra Madre Middle School. Participation is offered to students who demonstrate mastery beyond the current standards and who wish to move at an accelerated pace. Courses are taught by instructors with advanced math training, including a mathematics professor who formerly taught at Pomona College and was tenured at Clemson University.

Students complete math through calculus in middle school, leaving high school open to pursuing pure and applied undergraduate-level mathematics.

During “Solve 2017,” students will compete in three divisions:

5th-6th grade Algebra I
6th grade Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry
7th grade Calculus
