Washington Elementary STEM Magnet is expanding programs to include a school-wide focus on environmental studies and Spanish World Language.
Our students will develop as stewards of the Earth, who understand how global communities are connected through our dependence on and responsibilities to the natural environment and to each other.
What is STEM?
STEM magnet students will partner with top scientists in our region and utilize the most current technologies. Students will be able to see and understand the synergy of all subjects in working with others to solve environmental problems.
STEM is a way for students to know and understand their world using a hands-on, investigative approach to teaching and learning within a STEM-focused standard-based curriculum. Students will enjoy engaging and challenging learning experiences that will connect them to the real world. This is achieved through an innovative instructional approach that infuses Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math across the curriculum as students learn to inquire and apply knowledge through Project Based Learning.
Students will:
- Build robots that collect and sort trash.
- Gather atmospheric data through professional-grade digital sensors to share with NASA scientists.
- Construct original designs to solve environmental challenges, such as ways to filter polluted water.
- Conduct fieldwork in Los Angeles County's local natural areas, such as the Peck Road Water Conservation Park.
All students participate in hands-on environmental studies lessons within their classrooms and in each of our specialized spaces, including the STEM lab, technology innovation lab, imagination workshop, and outdoor garden classrooms.
What is Spanish World Language?
At Washington Elementary STEM Magnet, students learn the Spanish language through cultural experiences. Throughout their TK to 5th-grade journey, students explore Spanish through dance, plays, and culinary experiences that represent more than 20 Spanish-speaking countries.
