AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.

    AVID is a program designed around college-readiness that helps students develop the skills they need in order to be successful in college. This program places emphasis on growing the following skills: writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading.

    The AVID elective classes at WSMA offer:

    • Support for students in rigorous classes
    • Tutorials with college tutors
    • Exploration of college
    • Field trips to local colleges
    • Guest speakers
    • A curriculum that focuses on organizational strategies and WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) strategies
    • Leadership opportunities 
    In order to be a part of the AVID elective class, a student must:
    • have a 2.0 - 3.5 grade point average
    • be motivated to learn
    • attend regularly
    • be interviewed by an AVID elective teacher, AVID coordinator, AVID Site Team member, and/or counselor
    • A student might also be the first in his/her family to attend college
