    Rose City High School- Journalism

    This project-based class gives students the opportunity to develop as readers, writers, photographers, interviewers, and editors. Students in the class produce The Phoenix, the student newspaper for Rose City High School, produce content for the school website, social media, and produce the school yearbook to be distributed at the end of the year. The Phoenix is a member of the Southern California Journalism Education Association, the National Scholastic Press Association,  and takes several field trips each quarter.

    Student journalists develop the following skills:

    READING: Los Angeles Times online subscription, Pasadena Star-News online subscription, as well as various professional and student-created publications

    PHOTOJOURNALISM: Photo composition, use of digital SLR camera with lens attachments, journalistic ethics in editing, planning and timing posts on Instagram @rosecityhighschool

    INTERVIEWING: Professional interviewing skills, accurate recording and note-taking

    WRITING: Learn accurate, clear, reporting style for news, opinion, and human-interest stories

    MANAGEMENT: Develop skills in working with deadlines and collaborating with peers, sales and marketing for yearbook

    ETHICS: Understand the First Amendment and ethical responsibilities of journalists
