Kindergarten FAQ

  • As your child enters kindergarten, we know that you probably have a lot of questions. We want to make sure that you and your child feel at home here at Webster, so we have come up with a list of the most frequently asked questions about this very important first year of school. One of the best things you can do is to familiarize yourself and your child with our school by taking a tour or attending one of our fun pre-kindergarten events.

Kindergarten Playdate: In August each year, the Webster PTA hosts a playdate picnic in a nearby park. This is a time for families with incoming kindergarteners to get to know each other and for the kids to play with their future classmates.

New Families Welcome and Kindergarten Orientation: During the week before school starts, Webster hosts a New Families Welcome and Kindergarten Orientation, outside on the Kindergarten playground. Parents and staff members are on hand to meet the children and go over classroom routines, families will have the opportunity to view the classrooms, and Mrs. Forrest will give a tour of the school. Uniforms will be for sale at this event and literature about our school procedures will be available.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a special Kindergarten wing or designated playground?
Yes, all of our Kindergarten rooms are clustered together, on the first floor, in the main building.

What about the playground? Will my child be playing with bigger kids?
Kindergarten students have their own playground on the west side of the building, facing Pepper Drive. The gate on this side of the campus is locked at all times. All three kindergarten classes have lunch and recess together.

When can I find out which teacher my child will have?
All class lists will be posted at the PTA social on the afternoon before school starts in August. They will also be accessible at the front door facing Washington Boulevard overnight.

When and where should I drop my child off for school?
You may drop your child off in the school driveway as early as 7:30 am, 20 minutes before school. Kindergarten students meet and line up on the Kindergarten playground before school. Supervision is provided on the Kindergarten playground every morning.

We recommend that parents walk their Kindergarteners to the playground for at least the first few days of school. Park on the street or in the lot at St. James Church and walk your child into the kindergarten playground.

Additional information is available on our Arrival and Dismissal Procedures page

What are your afternoon pick up procedures?
All children will be walked to the pick up lines under the shade structure on the east side of the parking lot. Children will be supervised at all times. You may either wait in the car line for driveway pick up or park your car in on the street or in the St. James lot and walk to pick up your child. Please wait outside for your child.

What is the procedure for snacks and lunch?
Breakfast is served in the cafeteria every morning starting at 7:10 am. Children may bring a healthy snack to eat during morning recess, around 9:30 am. Kindergarten lunch time is 11:00 am. Students may eat lunch from the cafeteria or bring a healthy lunch from home.

Additional information is available on our Cafeteria page.

Where can I buy school uniforms?
Uniforms consist of khaki or navy blue bottoms and a white, light blue or navy polo or dress shirt. Jackets of any kind may be worn. You can purchase uniforms at the PTA uniform sale before the first day of school, or at any major retailer, including Target, Sears, JCPenney, WalMart, The Children’s Place and Land’s End.

Additional information is available on our School Uniforms page.

What happens if my child gets sick or hurt?
We have a School Nurse or Health Clerk on campus 5 days/week. Your child will be evaluated and treated immediately. You will be called right away if the injury is severe, or if your child needs to go home due to illness.

Additional information is available on our Health Office page.

I work. Do you have after school care for Kindergarteners?
We have two after-school programs on campus at Webster. LEARNs is our after school enrichment program. The hours are from dismissal to 6:00 pm, and students must attend at least 15 hours per week.  The program is designed to complement the school day and includes homework help, enrichment programs and structured recreation. You may obtain an application for the LEARNS program in our office or at the PUSD District Office. The Webster LEARNS office is located in Rm 111. Our second after school program is Parks and Recreation. This afternoon program, run by the City of Pasadena, is a drop-in play program, with homework assistance provided 30 minutes daily. The hours are from dismissal to 5:30 daily.

I would love to help out around school and in my child’s class. How do I go about volunteering?
We love our parent volunteers here at Webster! All of our classrooms welcome volunteers, and there are many ways that both working and stay at home parents can be involved. Please speak with your child’s teacher to find out how you can help in his or her classroom or at recess. We have a wonderful community of room parents, and all parents are welcome to sign up. We also have an active and enthusiastic PTA, and there are many other ways to get involved in our yearly events, beautification days and other areas. Meetings are the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm. All visitors and volunteers on campus must sign in at the office and obtain a badge. Parent volunteers must also have a current TB test.
