Dr. Mathew Kodama

I am delighted to reach out to you as Pasadena High School's principal. For those that I have yet to meet, I am a proud PUSD graduate and began my educational career in 1992 as an instructional assistant at Don Benito Fundamental School. From there, I went on to serve in various capacities as a teacher, inclusion specialist, curriculum coach, support provider for beginning teachers, and assistant principal at PHS from 2013 to 2015. After serving as an assistant principal at PHS, I spent seven years in the Covina-Valley Unified School District as principal of a middle school, continuation high school, special education adult transition school, and was founding principal of an AB130-aligned K-12 independent study school. While in Covina Valley, my teams expanded the Project Lead the Way Engineering Program from a single class to a fully developed pathway, established "Femineers", an all-girl Engineering club, and Girls Who Code to challenge gender stereotypes in computer science. My schools have been the recipient of numerous grants, including Mr. Holland's Opus (2017) and an Arizona State University/Verizon Innovative Learning for Virtual Reality (2020) and an IFT Innovation grant (2022).

I am grateful to the Pasadena community and deeply humbled that I have been offered the privilege to serve our exceptional school, where students come first. Our philosophy of students first is exemplified in our dedication to developing the whole scholar, beyond the classroom walls through academic and athletic competition, the arts, and our comprehensive offerings of clubs and student activities.

Pasadena High School is a dynamic place that strives to meet the needs of all learners.  We are the home of several unique programs and pathways like the Law and Public Service Academy, the App Academy, Creative Arts Media and Design, the CARE program, Math Academy, the Puente program, and Chinese Dual Language Immersion program.  In addition to these outstanding academic programs, we are proud to support several student clubs and activities in partnership with our Associated Student Body and we are home to the only Ford Model A club in the United States.I invite our parents and community partners to learn more about these programs through our website or by scheduling a tour of campus.

I look forward to a meaningful and impactful 2023-2024 school year and thank you for your continued support.

Go Bulldogs!

Mrs. Vivian Huang

It’s a great honor that I join the Team of Bulldogs as the Assistant Principal. I have begun my administrative work as a TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignments) coaching and providing support to the special education staff. This experience gave me an invaluable foundation to build up my skill set as a Special Education Coordinator that began in 2017. As a strong advocate for students with exceptional needs, my primary goal has never changed which is to connect resources to our students and families and to meet their programmatic needs. With my teaching career began in a non-public school teaching the most vulnerable and marginalized youth, I quickly realized that the evidence-based interventions in both academic and socioemotional development were the key to build resilience in learning and bridge the cap for student achievement. All students deserve an equitable educational experience.

I earned a B.A. degree in Child Development, an Education Specialist Credential as well as a Master of Arts degree in Special Education from the California State University, Los Angeles. I further pursued my advanced graduate studies in Educational Administration with the University of California, Irvine. When I am off campus, I enjoy biking and hiking with my husband and our two boys. My greatest accomplishment in recent years was that I finally conquered my fear and learned how to ski. My children were indeed the best mentor teachers on this adventurous journey! I look forward to the years ahead to service our Bulldog community.

Mrs. Huang is the Assistant Principal in charge of Instruction and Curriculum at Pasadena High School.

Mr. Jason Taylor

As Assistant Principal, I am excited for the opportunity to continue growing with the Pasadena Community to provide an inclusive and equitable educational experience for our entire student body.

I’ve been in Pasadena Unified for 25 years and have taught Math, Robotics and Computer and Business application courses. For the past 2 years, I have been a member of the PHS faculty and most recently served as the Instructional Coach. In that position, I spent time contributing and learning from different members of the school community to support all of our students. I’ve worked closely with our English Learners and their parents to provide access and support to reach their educational goals and advocated for equitable teaching practices in multiple subject areas. I will continue to build off the work done and serve our community across all departments.

Outside of work, I like to spend time doing DIY home projects, baking, and spending quality time with my family. I am also an avid sports fan and love to travel whenever possible. I look forward to the challenge of supporting our Bulldog Community in their endeavor to make curriculum culturally responsive, inclusive, and equitable for all students.

Mr. Taylor is the Assistant Principal in charge of Student Support Services at Pasadena High School.

Mr. Gilbert Saldivar

I am both humbled and proud to introduce myself as your Pasadena High School Assistant Principal. My education road to Pasadena High School spans over twenty years and four counties. After graduating from Venice High School, I attended Santa Monica College & then San Diego State University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology & then became a Board-Certified Athletic Trainer. Soon afterward, I returned to SDSU for my math credential.

Over the next ten years, my time was spent teaching in San Diego at Steele Canyon, Horace Mann and Olympian High Schools. During this time, I also received my CTE Health Science, Medical Technology Credential to teach Sports Medicine. After San Diego, I moved to Orange County and taught math at Costa Mesa Middle School/High School. Then, in Riverside County, I taught at Raymond Cree in Palm Springs before returning to Los Angeles. My last ten years were spent at Leuzinger High School in Centinela Valley, where I served as site athletic trainer, Sports Medicine teacher, district tech trainer, district DLI Teacher Leader, district technology Piloteer and district Integrated Math I & Integrated Math II Course Lead. As course lead, my focus was to redefine what the purpose of our Integrated Math I and II courses were, not just to teach math as a means to an end. Finally, I have over thirty years of coaching experience in various sports, including 20-years’ experience as a CIF Varsity Head Coach.

There are no words to describe the excitement I feel as a member of such a prestigious and storied school and district.  My mantra is simple. Students First. I will use all of my skills and experience to make sure our students are provided with all the necessary tools, structures, guidance and supports they need to attain their unique successes for college, career and beyond.

Mr. Saldivar is the Assistant Principal in charge of Activities and Facilities at Pasadena High School.
