Puente Program

  • Puente is a unique program that teams a school counselor, a college level writing class, field trips, and a support team that is committed to maximizing the student’s education and to see that he/she graduates from John Muir High School and enrolls in a four year college or university.

The Puente Program was founded in 1981 and is supported through UC Berkeley. The goals of the program presently, are 1) to increase the number of underrepresented students graduating from high school, 2) increase the number of underrepresented students enrolling in colleges and universities, and 3)  to involve student, parents, and the local community in the education of their youth.

Our program is dedicated to making higher education a reality to all families.  The program requires students to be enrolled in an honors level English Puente class for 2 years with aspirations of continuing to the AP (Advance Placement) courses and to push themselves educationally.  Students will also be required to attend field trips, a leadership conference, and community service projects. Students must be committed to do their best in school.
