Degrees and Certifications:
My name is Michael Dakan and I will be your English teacher this year. I grew up here in Pasadena and attended Loyola High School in Los Angeles. I graduated from the University of San Francisco, was married in 1990, and we decided to move back down to Pasadena to raise a family. I received my teacher's credential from Cal State Los Angeles, and a Masters in Educational Administration from Concordia University. I love teaching, especially high school students who seem to have an enthusiasm for knowledge. I have taught at an alternative school in East Los Angels before teaching at Eliot for two years. I have been at Blair since 98. This is my 19th year here with the VIKINGS. I have been teaching since 1991. Teaching is never dull. I enjoy teaching and learning from my students.
I have a large and supportive family living in Pasadena. I grew up in the neighborhood and had two siblings who attended Blair. I have one older brother, and two younger sisters. All of my family lives in Pasadena. I have a son, Jack, who is 19, a daughter, Sophia, who is 18, and my youngest son William who is twelve! My wife works in the financial industry.
This summer I went to Laguna and Yosemite. We love to travel. I enjoy all music, especially acoustic guitar, jazz, and R and B. We love the outdoors: camping, hiking, fishing, and skiing. I played water polo and soccer in high school and hope to see a competitive team this year at Blair. I enjoy a good book. I also enjoy a good game of pool. I have also taught summer school the past few years through S.E.P/PFS. at Polytechnic school
There are several areas I had difficulty with in school and hope to get better at now. I did not like history, and science was tough as well. I did not learn a language as well as I should have although I speak some Spanish. Knowing a second language is extremely important considering the multicultural society that we live in. It is especially important to be able to communicate with all kinds of people.
I look forward to teaching, learning, and working with you this year. Please do not hesitate to ask questions, see me for help, or just stop by to say hi
