Great Minds in STEM and Boeing Viva Technology Day
ON Wednesday, October 14 over 20 Boeing Engineers from around the country as well as local college students came to work with Jackson fourth and fifth grade students through a partnership with The Great Minds in STEM organization as part of their Viva Technology Program. Great Minds in STEM facilitated a parent and teacher orientation as well as an all day hands-on learning experience for over 100 students. The students worked in teams with a Boeing engineer representing various Engineering Fields and worked on a glider challenge as well as an innovation challenge. Students had an opportunity to ask questions of their college captains and Boeing Representatives and work on their various challenges. Students were also awarded raffle tickets for participation and innovation, students recived prizes such as telescopes, cameras, and two lucky winners went home with a tablet computer!
Jackson Magnet was one of five schools chosen this year to be the recipient of a large donation of books from the San Marino Rotary Club!! Jackson was invited to select up to $1000.00 worth of books from Scholastic, and we were able to use this wonderful and generous gift to help build classroom libraries for all our DLIP classes. On May 5, 2015 San Marino Rotary Club members presented the books to the first and second grade DLIP classes in a brief ceremony in the library.
THANK YOU SAN MARINO ROTARY CLUB!!
Rosetta Space Probe & Story Pirates
JPL is partnering with Story Pirates to celebrate the historic landing of a robotic instrument on the surface of a comet. The incredible scientific and technological feat is scheduled to take place on November 12, 2014.
Story Pirates will visit Jackson and perform for our upper grade students on Tuesday, October 14. The group of actors will present scientific facts about the Rosetta mission in a fun and engaging way. Afterwards, the performers will challenge our students to share ideas for related science fiction stories! The best student entries will be performed on stage at JPL to celebrate the landing of the Philae on the comet known as “67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko!”
Community Science Academy (CSA) Program at Caltech
CSA will give students access to SKIES, an app that lets students, teachers, and university scientists easily learn, create, and share knowledge with one another. The program features a range of do-it-yourself scientific instrumentation that will allow our students to engage in authentic scientific research. Our students will see how their exploration and resulting data will add to the growing body of scientific knowledge!
CSA will host regular events where scientists and teachers will meet to discuss cutting edge research and translate them into practical lab activities and lessons for our students. Using SKIES, students will be able to share their thoughts, questions, and data with classmates, students, and teachers from other schools, as well as with university scientists.
