Due to the rise in transmission rates among LA County and an increase in positive cases among PUSD schools, mask use is now required indoors and outdoors for visitors and volunteers who visit school sites.

As a reminder, masks are also required for students and staff members who have been exposed for 10 days from the date of exposure. Transmission rates and PUSD protocols will be continually reviewed over the summer. We will remain vigilant and continue to take steps to ensure that everyone stays healthy.

Update May 19, 2022

  • Due to the rise in transmission rates among LA County and an increase in positive cases among PUSD schools, mask use is now required indoors and outdoors for visitors and volunteers who visit school sites or attend a PUSD promotion or graduation from now through at least June 3.

As a reminder, masks are also required for students and staff members who have been exposed for 10 days from the date of exposure. Transmission rates and PUSD protocols will be continually reviewed over the summer. We will remain vigilant and continue to take steps to ensure that everyone stays healthy.

Thank you for your continued cooperation.

Student Isolation Protocol - May 11, 2022

  • In an effort to continue in-person learning, PUSD is transitioning to a new isolation protocol for students who test positive for COVID-19. Previous protocol required COVID-19 positive students to isolate for 10 days.
Beginning May 10, a COVID-19 positive student can leave isolation between Day 6 and Day 10 if specific criteria are met.

Students with COVID-19 can end isolation on Day 6 ONLY if all of the following criteria are met:
    (1) A COVID-19 viral test** collected on Day 5 or later is negative; AND
    (2) No fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine; AND
    (3) Other symptoms are significantly improved and resolving

    --OR--

Isolation can end on Day 11 if the following criteria are met:
    (1) No fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine; AND
    (2) Other symptoms are not present or are significantly improved and resolving.

**The test must be an FDA authorized viral test (e.g., PCR or antigen test, including at home tests). An antigen test is preferred for testing out of isolation.

The new criteria is based on the Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) Exposure Management Protocol to allow for a reduced isolation timeline.

All PUSD students who return from isolation must wear a mask for 10 full days after the onset of symptoms or if asymptomatic, for 10 full days after the first positive test. Testing on Day 5 must be completed at the Primary Clinic at the Ed Center and observed by the nurse to guarantee proper procedure has been followed. The Primary Clinic Testing Nurse will fill out the appropriate documentation clearing the student to return to school. The student's principal, health clerk and school nurse will be notified of the student's return to school status in the event that they are cleared prior to their tenth day of isolation.

For students who are currently (prior to May 10) in isolation, if they have already completed 5 days of isolation, they should follow the new isolation protocol. If a student is directed to isolate on May 10 or later, they should follow the new isolation protocol.

March 28, 2022 - COVID-19 UPDATE

  • Every week on average, we test about 4,500 students. Our overall transmission rate dropped to 0.39 percent March 1-26, down significantly from January, when it was 11.21 percent. This is good news, but we must remain vigilant and continue to take steps to ensure that everyone stays healthy.

Masking Updates for Students

  • Masks will no longer be required but strongly recommended indoors at Pasadena Unified schools and childcare sites, starting March 14, 2022, following guidance from state, county, and local public health authorities.

While we’re lifting the mask mandate in PUSD, we must remain vigilant as new variants of the virus develop. If conditions change, it is possible that the mask mandate could be reinstated, so we must keep masks within easy reach.

It is strongly recommended, but not required, that students wear upgraded masks which at a minimum are well-fitting, non-cloth mask of multiple layers of non-woven material with a nose wire. Nothing in this protocol requires that the school provide upgraded masks to its general student population and parental preference should be respected as to the level of PPE the student wears.

Although masks are not required but still strongly recommended in many cases, mask mandates remain in place in the following circumstances:

    • Exposed students, identified as close contacts, must wear masks for 10 days after exposure.

    • Exposed students who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated must wear masks upon returning to school from quarantine from Day 6 through Day 10.

    • Students and staff members on a bus or other PUSD transportation must wear masks at all times.

    • Students and staff on a field trip at a public facility must wear masks while indoors.

    • Students, staff, and community members at a PUSD testing or vaccination clinic must wear masks.

    • Masks will also be required in the school Health Offices and the PUSD Primary Clinic as these offices provide health care.

It’s imperative for everyone to feel safe on PUSD campuses. We have a diverse population with differing views and health conditions and we ask that our parents, students, and staff be respectful of each other’s views. We know that some students and staff may have concerns about removing their masks indoors and may choose to continue wearing one. That’s ok. After two years, we know there are individual and private reasons for staff and students to keep wearing their masks. Please be respectful of each others’ decisions.
