2021-2022 Safety Updates & Plans

  • PUSD has multiple layers of safety measures in place and will comply with the State’s public health requirements for schools. We continue to work closely with the Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD).

COVID-19 Tests

  • Employees
Per this new State public health order, effective immediately all unvaccinated PUSD employees must take a weekly COVID-19 test. Tests will be available at school sites and at the PUSD Primary Health Clinic.

Please see the info on pusd.us/covidtest.

Get Tested! We strongly encourage all students not yet eligible for vaccination to get tested. PUSD is providing incentives for students to get tested. These include gift cards, water bottles, stickers, and drawings for gift baskets for the family.

How and Where PUSD Students and Staff Can Get Tested

    • PUSD offers COVID-19 PCR oral or nasal swab tests on campuses and at the District’s Primary Clinic,  8 a.m. - 3:30 pm. By appointment, please call (626) 396-3600, ext 88180.

Isolation Information as of May 2022

  • In an effort to continue in-person learning, PUSD is transitioning to a new isolation protocol for students who test positive for COVID-19. Previous protocol required COVID-19 positive students to isolate for 10 days.
Beginning May 10, a COVID-19 positive student can leave isolation between Day 6 and Day 10 if specific criteria are met.

Students with COVID-19 can end isolation on Day 6 ONLY if all of the following criteria are met:
    (1) A COVID-19 viral test** collected on Day 5 or later is negative; AND
    (2) No fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine; AND
    (3) Other symptoms are significantly improved and resolving

Isolation can end on Day 11 if the following criteria are met:
    (1) No fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine; AND
    (2) Other symptoms are not present or are significantly improved and resolving.

**The test must be an FDA authorized viral test (e.g., PCR or antigen test, including at home tests). An antigen test is preferred for testing out of isolation.

The new criteria is based on the Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) Exposure Management Protocol to allow for a reduced isolation timeline.

All PUSD students who return from isolation must wear a mask for 10 full days after the onset of symptoms or if asymptomatic, for 10 full days after the first positive test. Testing on Day 5 must be completed at the Primary Clinic at the Ed Center and observed by the nurse to guarantee proper procedure has been followed. The Primary Clinic Testing Nurse will fill out the appropriate documentation clearing the student to return to school. The student's principal, health clerk and school nurse will be notified of the student's return to school status in the event that they are cleared prior to their tenth day of isolation.

For students who are currently (prior to May 10) in isolation, if they have already completed 5 days of isolation, they should follow the new isolation protocol. If a student is directed to isolate on May 10 or later, they should follow the new isolation protocol.

Self-Screen Before You Leave Home

  • Stay home if you’re sick.
    • Before leaving home, all students, employees, and parents must conduct a self-check. Ask yourself these questions:
      • Do I have a fever?
      • Do I have a cough?
      • Am I experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing?
      • Am I experiencing any other symptoms?
      • Have I been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days?
      • In the last two weeks, have I been directed to quarantine, isolate or take a COVID-19 test?

    • If you respond "yes" to any of the questions, you must stay home and contact your school or office. It is recommended that you contact your primary care physician for further medical advice. If you have a fever with cough or shortness of breath, you are urged to contact your primary care physician as these symptoms may be attributed to COVID-19.

    • Upon arrival at school, school staff will perform a brief check-in to verify that students have completed a symptom screening.

Wearing Masks

  • Masks will no longer be required but strongly recommended indoors at Pasadena Unified schools and childcare sites starting March 14, 2022. The relaxed rules come in response to declining COVID-19 cases, fewer hospitalizations, and increasing vaccination rates.

Although masks are not required but still strongly recommended in many cases, mask mandates remain in place in the following circumstances:

    • Exposed students, identified as close contacts, must wear masks for 10 days after exposure.
    • Exposed students who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated must wear masks upon returning to school from quarantine from Day 6 through Day 10.
    • Students and staff members on a bus or other PUSD transportation must wear masks at all times.
    • Students and staff on a field trip at a public facility must wear masks while indoors.
    • Students, staff, and community members at a PUSD testing or vaccination clinic must wear masks.
    • Masks will also be required in the school Health Offices and the PUSD Primary Clinic as these offices provide health care.

It’s imperative for everyone to feel safe on PUSD campuses. We have a diverse population with differing views and health conditions and we ask that our parents, students, and staff be respectful of each other’s views. We know that some students and staff may have concerns about removing their masks indoors and may choose to continue wearing one. That’s ok. After two years, we know there are individual and private reasons for staff and students to keep wearing their mask. Please be respectful of each others’ decisions.
