If you are having issues with your child's attendance, the Office of Child Welfare and Attendance is here is support you and your family. Below you will find a number of tips, strategies, and resources for parents that can help increase your child's attendance and ensure their success in school.
Why Students Miss School

There are a number of reasons students may miss school. These may include but are not limited to:
- Financial reasons
- students needing to work, parents with difficult work schedules, or homelessness
- Health issues
- chronic health conditions or substance abuse
- Personal barriers
- low self-esteem and feelings of failure
- Lack of transportation
- Negative peer interactions
- bullying, peer pressure, and gang affiliations
- Financial reasons
Strategies for Parents

- Make sure your child goes to bed early and gets a good night’s sleep
- Develop a morning routine to arrive in a timely fashion
- Take an interest in your child’s school work
- Provide regular times and a quiet, clean area for doing homework
- Provide an alarm clock for your child
- If your child starts to miss school, speak to the school to seek support
- Have regular communication with the school
- Post the school calendar and notes on the refrigerator, or another visible location
- Keep open communication lines with your child
