Dr. Merian Stewart

Dr. Merian Stewart is now in her 31st year as an educator. Dr. Stewart began her career as an instructional assistant in the Pasadena Unified School District. She went on to become an elementary school teacher, teaching grades 3rd - 6th. In 1999 Dr. Stewart became the proud principal for PUSD's Noyes Elementary. In 2004 Dr. Stewart took a two-year hiatus to serve as Director of Programs and Services for the D'Veal Family and Youth Services Mental Health Agency. In 2006, Dr. Stewart returned to PUSD as the assistant principal of Washington Middle School. In 2008, she became the principal of Washington Middle School, now known as Washington STEAM Multilingual Academy. During her tenure at the middle school, she ushered the school through its transition into a becoming a magnet school with a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics-STEAM focus. She assisted with acquiring a grant for over $2, 250,000 to support the school's transition to becoming a magnet middle school. Additionally, she worked untiringly with contractors to design the new state of the art gymnasium and recreational facility for the school.  In the fall of 2016, Dr. Stewart returned to elementary school with a wealth of experience and expertise. While serving as the principal of Franklin Elementary School, she worked with the Fox family to adopt a computer science immersion program, Code To The Future. Code To The Future afforded teachers the opportunity to implement computer science across the curriculum in grades TK- 5th. 

Having served as an elementary and middle school leader, Dr. Stewart is a natural selection to now serve as the principal of McKinley. Dr. Stewart is known for building school environments that exemplify high expectations, rigor, and excellence.  

She expresses gratitude for the opportunity to work with the students, families, and staff in the beautiful city of Pasadena where she is a resident. She states she is excited to work with McKinley to further build hands-on learning systems that prepare students for the next stage of their education and life.
