The choral music program at Don Benito Fundamental consists of a multi-cultural song curriculum. Examples include, vocal music instruction, music theory (rhythm, beat and note recognition), history/cultural exploration, and the practical rehearsal of songs and/or skits in preparation for a public performance. There will be two performances, during the school year, which will showcase students' work from throughout the year.
Classes are taught by Mrs. Laura Pitts.
Last year the Don Benito PTA applied for and received a grant from "The Showcase House" to develop this multi-cultural song curriculum. This grant supplemented PTA funds that pay for the vocal music teacher. The Don Benito PTA has been the primary support of the choral music program. An application to the City of Pasadena for an Art Education Partnership Grant has been submitted for continuation of this program.
Instrumental music instruction at Don Benito is offered to students in grade 3 and above. Beginning music classes in violin and brass instruments for grade 3 are taught twice a week. Students in grade 4 and above can join the string orchestra for string instruments and the brass band for brass instruments. Orchestra and band practice are conducted during school hours twice a week. The orchestra and band perform twice during the school year at Don Benito. Students also participate in the All District Music Festivals with students from other Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) schools. Music at PUSD is supported by a number of local organizations.
