Cross Country Fall 2023
SMMS Cross Country Team
We're excited to announce that the SMMS cross country team is returning this fall to compete in the 210 League. We had a fun and successful season last year with over 100 participants and hope to have another fun fall of early morning running!
The team is meant to be inclusive and welcoming. Everyone will get a chance to race and all are welcome regardless of previous experience. If you're playing other sports in the fall, cross country is a great way to build endurance and speed to help with them too. It's also just fun to run and chat with your friends before school!

Coaching Staff: The volunteer, parent coaches this year will be Adam Wierman (parent of 7th grader) and Sizhen Yoshida (parent of 8th grader). Adam ran track and cross country in college and Sizhen is an active marathon runner.
Practices: The team will practice twice a week before school. We will meet at 7:30am on the SMMS field Tuesdays and Thursdays for a bit of running and drills before school. There will often be some sort of food like bagels/donuts for the kids to eat after running since they will likely work up an appetite. Note that some practices will involve running on the neighborhood roads in addition to on the field. We will keep parental supervision when we do neighborhood runs. The first practice will likely be the 2nd week of school.
Races: Typically there are 2-4 races on weekday afternoons. Races are by grade level, so we aim to have Boys and Girls teams at 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The race distance is between 1 and 2 miles, depending on the course. Exact days/times are still TBD.
